About Amigurumi - Knitted Or Crochet Japanese Miniature Dolls and Animals

Amigurumi means "knitted or crocheted stuffed doll" in Japanese. It also defines this unique art form, which is conquering the hearts of many enthusiastic crafters and designers by storm allover the world.

Knitting or crocheting these character dolls or cute animals out of yarn is simple and can be tackled even by a beginner. The designs are uncomplicated and the patterns, which suggest working in spirals - not rows, or joined rounds -, are easy to follow.

For the best results, Amigurumi crafters use a hook, or knitting needles, smaller than usually suggested by the yarn manufacturers. This is done intentionally. Using a smaller size hook or needles produces a tidier, denser fabric, a foundation that will not allow the stuffing to pierce through.

With the exception of those funky creations that have no limbs, most Amigurumi are worked in sections and then sewn together. If there is only a head and torso, the doll will be worked as one piece. The body is usually stuffed with fiber stuffing, while extremities can also be shaped with plastic pellets. This will give them more weight.

Depending on the materials used, some of these toys, or collectibles, with an over-sized spherical head, a cylindrical body, embellishments, and often small extremities can be machine washed. Others should only by cleaned by hand, especially those created from materials other than yarn. These miniature dolls should NOT be given to pets and small children, especially if they are decorated with buttons, beads, plastic eyes, felt pieces, or other, easy detachable, parts. They may turn into a choke hazard.

TIP: The crocheted dolls are done in single crochet stitch. Use a stitch marker to mark the end of each round. This makes it is easy to remember where another round should be started. The marker is moved up as the work progresses.
